Alumni judges administer state, federal oaths to 60 at December 2015 Bar Ceremony

December 9, 2015 – Nearly 300 were in attendance at the December 2015 Bar Swearing-In Ceremony, which saw approximately sixty Pepperdine Law graduates – most of them successful takers of the Summer 2015 bar exam – sworn into state and/or federal courts by Pepperdine Law alumni judges.

In her remarks, The Honorable Beverly Reid O'Connell (JD '90), District Court for the Central District of California, spoke about the "Ten Things You Need in Law Practice" with the help of numerous props. Two highlights included a toy soldier to "jealously guard your own reputation" and a compass to remind the new attorneys about the moral compass that they share with Pepperdine Law.

The Honorable Andre Birotte, Jr. (JD '91), District Court for the Central District of California, recalled a Pepperdine professor telling him, "You will remember the day you passed the bar and the birth of your children just as vividly." Judge Birotte, who now has three children, confirmed that to be true. He also spoke about the nobility of the legal profession, noting, "The real nobility in law is your service, what you do with your degree." He advised the new attorneys, "Guard your reputation dearly, and use your degree to serve."
