Straus: Summer and Fall 2017 Externship

The Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center provides mediation, restorative justice and conflict resolution services to the diverse communities in the Los Angeles region. Through our mediation services, we offer people an alternative to costly and time-consuming court services. Through our restorative justice program, we offer individuals involved in criminal conflicts the opportunity to understand, heal and improve their situation going forward. We also strive to improve human relations and race relations by addressing complex, cross-cultural community conflicts and their root causes through collaboration with community partners. We are dedicated to serving traditionally under-served and underrepresented people in order to ensure equal access for all.

Internship opportunity

Conflict Resolution Specialists (CRS):

Get training and experience needed to become a certified mediator for both regular and litigated disputes. This is a program designed to provide training and practice opportunity for candidates who are interested in the legal, social service and political sector. You will have a chance to experience the "behind the scenes" work for legal professionals as well as frontline practice of mediation from the very beginning to the end. The internship is open to all backgrounds; we especially encourage candidates with legal, social services, psychology and communication background(s) with bilingual skills to apply.

Internship candidates will be responsible for the following tasks after a minimum 25-hour mediation and conflict resolution training:

Conduct case intake interviews, interacting with clients, performing casework
Observe and perform mediation and conciliation
Assist with community education, public presentations, outreach programs and
day-to-day office operations
After finishing the internship, the candidate will receive a certificate of mediation training and professional practice.
Requirements:

We are looking for candidates who have an interest in community and grassroots work. Applicants should be organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented and willing to learn. Strong writing and speaking skills preferred. Bilingual students (Asian languages plus Spanish) are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to complete a minimum of 180 hours over a 5-month period. Minimum time commitment is 8 hours, 2 half-days per week Monday through Friday.

Restorative Justice Specialists (RJS):

Get training and experience needed to become a certified restorative justice facilitator for criminal and other, schools, familial, conflict situations. The RJS program is designed to provide training as well as practical experience in the quickly growing world of restorative justice practices. Candidates who are interested in a wide variety of domains from legal and social services to political, psychological and communications work will gain valuable experience both interacting with the mainstream justice system as well as contributing to the development of an important socio-cultural shift in the daily practice of American justice. You will take the lead in the process of case intakes, participant preparation and the realization of the session backed by a fully developed, solid process and APADRC's support staff. The internship is open to all backgrounds; we especially encourage candidates with the aforementioned backgrounds and bilingual skills to apply.

Candidates will be responsible for the following tasks after a 30-hour restorative justice training:

Receive referrals, conduct case intake interviews, interact with clients, perform casework
Observe and perform restorative justice sessions
Assist with community education, public presentations, outreach programs and
day-to-day office operations
Following the internship, the candidate will receive a certificate of restorative justice training and professional practice.
Requirements:

The Center is looking for people who have an interest in community and grassroots work. All interns and volunteers should be organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and willing to learn. Strong writing and speaking skills are preferred. Bilingual students (Asian languages & Spanish) are especially encouraged to apply. Interns/volunteers create their schedule with the Program Director, but should expect to commit approximately 20 hours per month to the completion of at least 10 cases.
