International Justice Mission Founder and CEO Gary Haugen and Pepperdine President Jim Gash Speak at Dean's Bible Study
Pepperdine University president Jim Gash and International Justice Mission (IJM) founder and CEO Gary Haugen spoke the at Dean's Bible Study at the Brock House on April 3. They discussed the mission of strengthening global justice and human rights, and the meaning of mercy and compassion. Haugen was visiting Pepperdine Caruso Law for the week to teach a course on human rights, criminal law, and the developing world.
Before founding IJM in 1997, Haugen was a human rights attorney for the US Department of Justice, where he focused on crimes of police misconduct. In 1994, he served as the director of the United Nations’ investigation in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. In this role, he led an international team of lawyers, criminal prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and forensics experts to gather evidence that would eventually be used to bring the perpetrators of the genocide to justice.
Haugen first taught a seminar on human rights and the rule of law at Caruso Law in 2011. Caruso Law was the first law school in the country to establish a student chapter of IJM. Haugen also visited the Malibu campus in 2009 and delivered the commencement speech at the law school graduation.
