Pepperdine Caruso Law Professors Present “All Hands on Deck: Implementing 303 Across Experiential Settings” -- Boston University School of Law
Clinical professors Brittany Stringfellow Otey and Tanya Asim Cooper, together with adjunct professor Peter Fendel, director of externships and pro bono programs, presented "All Hands on Deck: Implementing 303 Across Experiential Settings" at the Externships 12 Conference. The conference, titled "The Power of Agility: Navigating Change with Externships," was held at Boston University School of Law on October 17-19.
Externship program design differs widely across the country from law school to law school, and responding to the universal call to implement ABA Standard 303 requires agility and creativity to execute in a variety of contexts. In implementing the revised standard, the Holloran Center for Ethical Leadership in the Professions recommends law schools take an “enterprise-wide” approach.
At Pepperdine Caruso Law, externship and clinical faculty are working together to respond in a cohesive manner that enriches education across the department and models collegial collaboration. This cross-pollination model can serve as a template for all experiential faculty, with particular focus on equipping adjunct and part-time faculty.
Using methodology from the National SEED Project (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity), this presentation provided participants with an introduction to the SEED protocol for facilitating conversations in externship seminars around 303 topics of bias, cultural competency, racism, professional formation, and well being. Participants were provided with take-away, crowd-sourced and field-tested prompts and exercises for unpacking and exploring these important topics.
