Pepperdine Caruso Law Hosts Distinguished Scholars for "Presidential Leadership in Times of Crisis" Conference
On October 29, Pepperdine Caruso School of Law hosted the online conference "Presidential Leadership in Times of Crisis," in which some of the nation's leading historians and legal scholars discussed the leadership of United States presidents as they faced challenges during their presidencies. The conference topic was particularly relevant as the country approaches a presidential election. The program began with an introduction by Dean Paul Caron who thanked Professors Ed Larson and Tom Stipanowich for initiating the conference and assembling an impressive panel of distinguished scholars. Judge Tiffany Williams (ret.) then served as the moderator of the event as the following panelists offered their insights on presidential leadership during critical historic eras:
- Lawrence Friedman from Stanford University: Why Power Flows to the Center
- Ed Larson from Pepperdine University: The Signal Act of American Presidential Leadership: Washington Retires
- Suzanna Sherry from Vanderbilt University: The Election of 1800
- Thomas Stipanowich from Pepperdine University: Lincoln: Negotiating Emancipation
- Sanford Levinson from University of Texas: Election of 1920
- David Holmes from Lipscomb University: LBJ, MLK, and Passage of the Civil Rights Act
- Paul Rosenzweig from George Washington University: George Bush and the Visa Waiver Program
- Charles Fried from Harvard University: Presidential Leadership and Truth
Following their presentations, the panelists stayed for a question and answer and reflection session in which they addressed questions posed by conference attendees about the effect of presidential decisions, words, and actions.
