GoodCall: In this tough job climate for law graduates, what is your best piece of advice for recent grads looking to jump start their career?

Michael Hom: New law school graduates should take a longer-term approach to their career and not be too picky when seeking their first job after law school. Oftentimes, graduates will hold out for their dream job instead of building valuable experience elsewhere. Graduates should understand that nothing they do for a year or two will pigeon-hole them into a particular practice area, and that it is always easier to find a new job when they already have one. Many entry-level attorney positions will allow graduates to build transferable skills and experiences that will help them land their dream job, in time.
