London Sports Law and Dispute Resolution Study Tour 2023
Professor Maureen A. Weston, along with London-based adjunct professor Jeff Benz, arbitrator for the Court of Arbitration for Sport and former general counsel for United States Olympic Committee, led a group of students through a week-long International and Olympic Sports Law and Dispute Resolution Study Tour in London, England. Along with classroom lectures in Pepperdine’s London campus, students engaged in advocacy exercises on athlete selection and anti-doping violation dispute arbitrations.
The class visited the offices of major international sport operations and met with general counsel, legal teams, and sport executives at the British Horseracing Federation, Chelsea Football Club, International Tennis Integrity Association, StatsPerform, National Football League UK , and Sports Resolutions. The class also toured Legal London, Lincoln’s Inn, and visited international sports-related venues in London accompanied by guest expert lecturers. The class learned about the legal, governance, commercial, gambling, compliance, and political/social/technological issues in sport and considered how dispute prevention, management, and resolution processes can help the sports industry. The class is grateful to Karen Haygreen, assistant director of the Pepperdine Caruso Law London Program, for her assistance in navigating the class through London.
