Distinguished Mediators Bruce Edwards and Nina Meierding Share Expertise with Students
On December 7, distinguished mediators Bruce Edwards and Nina Meierding led a masterclass on effective mediation advocacy for an audience of over 100 students, alumni, and professionals in the Straus community.
Mr. Edwards and Ms. Meierding were joined by Professors Singh and Blondell in conversation, which began with a discussion on traits that make for effective mediation advocates. The speakers highlighted the role of curiosity in overcoming implicit bias, the power of preparation and self reflection, and the important role of patience in the mediation process.
Ms. Meierding then presented strategies for client preparation, including connecting with the mediator, and Mr. Edwards spoke about setting the tone in the opening of a mediation session. Both speakers emphasized the importance of communication, stressing credibility, active listening, and flexibility. The panelists also took questions from the audience and addressed how to handle impasse and predictable roadblocks to settlement.
