Professor Bernard James Publishes Series on "Restorative Justice Liability: School Discipline Reform and the Right to Safe Schools" -- University of Memphis Law Review
Professor Bernard James has published a five-part series, titled "Restorative Justice Liability: School Discipline and Reform and the Right to Safe Schools," in the University of Memphis Law Review. The series considers the relationship between school discipline reform and student rights. The five articles in the series are "Part I: The Shifting Legal Environment," 51 U. Memphis L. Rev. 557 (2021) (SSRN); "Part II: In Loco Parentis and the Duty to Protect," 51 U. Memphis L. Rev. 577 (2021) (SSRN); "Part III: External Reforms and the Duty to Protect," 51 U. Memphis L. Rev. 613 (2021) (SSRN); "Part IV: Judicial Review and the Duty to Protect," 51 U. Memphis L. Rev. 639 (2021) (SSRN); and "Part V: School Discipline Reform and Liability," 51 U. Memphis L. Rev. 691 (2021) (SSRN).
Professor James also led the keynote session at the 2021 National School Safety Conference held in Aurora, Colorado, in July. The conference was hosted by the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO), the leading organization for school-based policing. Professor James is a contributing editor to the NASRO Journal of School Safety. During the conference keynote session, titled "School Law Update," Professor James addressed the effects of new laws and budget cuts on police officers and school resource officers who support K-12 education.
