In Memoriam: Jared Lee ('20, MDR '21)
Pepperdine Caruso Law Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution and Seaver College alumnus Jared Lee (‘20, MDR ‘21) passed away unexpectedly on August 14 in Irvine, California. Lee completed a Certificate in Conflict Management through a collaborative program offered by Seaver College and Caruso Law’s Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution as an undergraduate student and then earned an MDR degree. He was honored as a distinguished undergraduate certificate alumnus at the annual undergraduate Certificate in Conflict Management graduation reception in 2020.
Lee won first place at the first annual Straus Institute Mediation Competition in 2021. He later served as chair of the Mediation Honor Board and as co-chair of the second annual Mediation Competition in 2022.
Straus Institute professor Stephanie Blondell comments, "Jared was an exceptional student and human being. He was a shining star and a true peacemaker who changed his community and the world. As the president of the Mediation Competition Honor Board, I saw his professionalism, commitment, and acumen for dispute resolution. Jared brought that excellence to everything he did and made friends wherever he went. He will be missed, and remembered as a friend and the true servant leader that he was."
The Straus Institute is collecting donations to award a deserving recipient a one-time scholarship to carry on the work that was important to Jared, including advancing the ombuds industry and integrating conflict resolution and mediation into Christian communities of faith. Gifts should be directed to the existing Straus Giving Page, which may be found at Straus Institute Give, and should include in the comment field "In Memory of Jared Lee."
A message from the family of Jared Lee:
To our family and friends,
Few loved life more than the positive, energetic, and always upbeat Jared Lee. If he wasn’t surfing, snowboarding, or doing a triathlon he was traveling, gardening, or helping a friend at church. Even though that doesn’t make his passing any easier, we know he wouldn’t want any of us to be alone in our sorrow. We are hosting a celebration of life to share our memories, and rejoice in both the life he led and the path he prepared for. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations to a charity Jared worked at while in Hawaii called “The Pantry."
