Family Day 2017

On Friday, September 29, 135 family members joined us in Malibu to experience student life at Pepperdine Law. Beyond academic excellence and the beautiful campus, what most people recognize about Pepperdine is the community. This was evident right from the start as deans, professors, students, and staff gathered on the terrace to welcome guests. After a hearty breakfast, families joined first-year students in their morning classes to get a real feel for law school. A law school life panel presentation then took place on the cafe terrace, with the ocean shimmering in the background. The parents were provided an opportunity to learn about the individual institutes and programs at Pepperdine Law and ask questions to students and faculty.

The Veterans' Law Society proudly hosted special guest speaker Justice Eileen Moore (JD '78) for an afternoon session. In her nonjudicial careers, Justice Moore practiced as a registered nurse, including service as a combat nurse in Vietnam, and she related this experience to what's being done today in the court systems of California.

The capstone event of Family Day was the final round of the Armand Arabian Advocacy Tournament. Tracy Smith (JD '19) argued on behalf of the petitioners, and Bailey Blaies (JD '18) argued on behalf of the respondent. The competition problem was written by Paul Czer (JD '19). The judges expressed how impressed they were with both participants, and Smith was ultimately named the winner of this year's moot court competition.

We are grateful to the families who traveled from near and far to share this special day with us.
