Professor Barry P. McDonald delivered two presentations, a Supreme Court Civil Docket Update and a Criminal Docket Update, at the Federal Judicial Center 2023 National Conference for Appellate Staff Attorneys. The conference took place in Florida on June 7-9.

U.S. Supreme Court Civil Docket Update
This session covers the major decisions from the extraordinary 2021-22 term of the Court (the Dobbs abortion rights and Bruen gun rights rulings, and the WVA v. EPA major questions doctrine ruling), as well as the major cases of the current term (e.g., affirmative action, voting rights and same-sex non-discrimination rights).

This session covers the important criminal justice cases of the current 2022-23 term of Court, including showdowns between free speech v. criminal liability for threatening Internet posts and encouraging unlawful immigration, what it takes to commit federal wire fraud, honest services fraud and obstruction of justice, whether federal courts have jurisdiction over criminal actions against foreign state-owned entities, and Sixth Amendment Confrontation Clause rights.
