Israeli Democracy & Religious Diversity | Classroom D
Israel is currently embroiled in conflict over whether and how to reform its judicial system. Every week, hundreds of thousands of Israelis protest the new government’s attempts to change the delicate balance between the Supreme Court and the Israeli Knesset. The press all over the world continues to report on every development, which is no surprise. At the center of the debate stands one of the age-old and universal questions of liberal democracy: how should a religiously diverse society best build political institutions that represent both religious and secular interests?
Come hear Professor Netta Barak-Corren, in conversation with Professor Michael Helfand, explain what’s at stake in this generational conflict. Professor Barak-Corren, one of the world's experts on Israeli constitutional law, has been an advisor to Israeli President Herzog as they try to find a middle ground in this debate as well as part of a small group currently calling for a constitutional convention in Israel. Her experiences with Israel's judicial reforms will provide keen insights—both theoretical and practical--on where this controversy may be headed and what it tells us about how a young democratic country navigates conflict over its most central political institutions.
Netta Barak-Corren is a Professor of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a member of Hebrew University’s Federmann Center for the Study of Rationality. This past year she was the David R. Greenbaum and Laureine Knight Greenbaum Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at Chicago Law School and Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Carey School of Law as well as a Visiting Fellow at Edmund & Lily Safra Center for Ethics in Harvard. She is also a Fellow at Pepperdine Caruso School of Law’s Nootbaar Institute for Law, Religion and Ethics. This year she is a Law, Ethics, and Public Policy Fellow at the Princeton University Center for Human Values.
