In Memoriam: Mark Torvinen (JD '77)

October 13, 2016 -- Pepperdine Law alumnus Mark Torvinen (JD '77) passed away on August 15, 2016 in Elko County, Nevada.

From the Reno Gazette-Journal:

Mark Torvinen, an honorable, kind, and loving man, parent, husband, son, uncle, and brother, died August 15, 2016. He was a third generation Nevadan, born to Jerry D. Torvinen and Barbara Fitzgerald Torvinen in Reno, Nevada in 1952. He is survived by his wife Barbara Inama Torvinen, his daughters Molly Torvinen-Winship, M.D., Michaella A. Torvinen, and Leah M. Torvinen, his mother, his brothers Michael and Greg, nieces Anna and Katie Layton, Katie, Kristen and Megan Torvinen, and his nephew Tyler.

He loved Elko County. He came to work as a cowboy for the summer on the 6 Bar Ranch in Spring Creek when he was 15, and his heart remained here. After college at the University of Nevada Reno, law school at Pepperdine, and 4 years in the U.S. Army, he came to Elko to stay, taking a job with the Elko County District Attorney's Office as a deputy prosecutor. He worked both as a prosecutor and a private defense attorney during his career. He was a man who was absolutely honest, honorable and followed his moral compass unerringly; he tried always to do the right thing.
