Straus Institute Offers 2024 Leadership in Dispute Resolution: International ADR and Global Justice Certificate
This summer, the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution and the Sudreau Global Justice Institute have come together to offer a unique master class. Inspired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Straus Institute is working with chief justices from different African countries to improve justice systems. The goal of the program is to share knowledge and focus on common principles of dispute resolution
The Straus Institute collaborated with chief justices from Kenya, Somalia, Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana, Malawi, and Zambia. Even though these countries have different legal systems, the participants are united by a shared commitment to justice and fair conflict resolution.
The project is led by Dr. Sukhsimranjit Singh and he invited professors Selina Shultz, Jack Coe, Shaphan Roberts, Helen Winter, and David Dowling to teach class sections in the program.
The classes covered important topics to understand and improve approaches to justice, which included:
- Impact of Culture on Decision Making
- Power of Emotions on Judgments
- Understanding Self in Difficult Conflict
- Mediating through Understanding
- Cross-Cultural Communication
The program, which is underway, has been very rewarding. The chief justices are actively participating, sharing their experiences, and learning from each other. The exchange of knowledge is creating a supportive community focused on improving justice systems in Africa, with positive changes already occuring.
