Professor Suhksimranjit Singh Brings Global Mediation Expertise to Brazil
Professor Suhksimranjit Singh, assistant dean and managing director of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, traveled to Brazil where he leveraged his global mediation expertise to engage with legal professionals and federal judges, serve as a judge in an international mediation competition, and feature the acclaimed programs of Pepperdine Caruso School of Law's Straus Institute. The international trip displayed Dr. Singh's expertise in mediation and significantly expanded Pepperdine's global network within the legal and mediation communities. Through engaging discussions, tailored workshops, and strategic meetings, Singh set the stage for future collaborations as he continues to enhance the Straus Institute's reputation as a leader in dispute resolution education.
On the first day of his visit, Singh addressed the Supreme Labor Court of Brazil, where he spoke before an impressive gathering of 150 federal judges who attended in person from across the county, and more than 300 judges who attended online. The judges expressed their admiration for Singh's work and their interest in visiting Pepperdine Caruso Law to attend the Straus Institute’s Professional Skills Program in the fall.
The following day, Singh made the opening remarks at the International Center for Conflict Prevention and Resolution’s (CPR) International Mediation Competition, where he interacted with over a dozen teams of three students representing twenty countries. His remarks were received with appreciation, and he took the opportunity to announce Straus Institute's programs to a global audience. Seven of Straus Institute's alumni served as judges in the international competition, which was attended by students who traveled from other states and countries to meet each other.
On the next day, Singh led a discussion with corporate lawyers and in-house counsel from various cities in Brazil, including São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, to determine their interest in the Straus Institute's program offerings. He presented a condensed half-day version of the Professional Skills Program training, which sparked significant interest among the attendees. Singh is developing a customized Mediating the Litigated Case program tailored to the needs of corporate lawyers and in-house counsel, which the Straus Institute will launch in the fall or early spring 2025.
The fourth day of the visit was marked by Singh's participation in judging the final rounds of the CPR International Mediation Competition. He awarded five masters degree scholarships to international students, which were warmly and gratefully received.
On the final day of his visit, Singh traveled to Curitiba, where he was hosted by three Straus Institute alumni. He addressed the Curitiba Bar Association, highlighting the Straus Institute's programs. Singh also visited the Regional Labor Court of the 9th Region and interacted with Chief Justice among other judges, further expanding the Straus Institute’s network and promoting its offerings in Brazil.
