Power of a Mentor Event Kicks Off Pepperdine Law's Annual Mentoring Programs

August 31, 2018 |In the first event of its kind, Pepperdine Law preceptors, student mentors, and faculty mentors joined together with the 1L class to kick off the year's mentoring programs at the School of Law. Since the school's inception, mentoring has remained a core value of a Pepperdine legal education.  "You can never underestimate the power of a mentor. Your role here is to mentor and be mentored," the 1L students heard during the first-ever "Power of a Mentor" event on Friday, August 24, 2018.

Started in 2012 by Dean Deanell Tacha, the Preceptor Program began with approximately 75 preceptors (mentors) and is now at 205 and counting. Alumni volunteer for the program from every sector of law practice, non-traditional careers, and the judiciary in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Ventura counties. Each year, several preceptors are recognized for their excellence in the program with the Otto Cipolla Preceptor of the Year Award at the annual School of Law Dinner.

"You will gain mentorship and friendship, and it's one of the most amazing aspects of Pepperdine - you won't regret it," shared 2L student mentor Alexandra Prime.

This year's "Power of a Mentor" program featured several speakers: Dean Paul Caron, Alumni Director Jessie Fahy, Dean Naomi Goodno (representing the faculty mentor program), 2L Alexandra Prime (representing the student mentor program),  Judge Terry Bork (JD '85, former Preceptor of the Year), Kelsey Schultz (JD '14, former Preceptor of the Year), and Dean Emeritus Ronald Phillips.
