Pepperdine Caruso School of Law
Last fall, Pepperdine University introduced its Early Alert Service, a confidential weekly check-in through text-messaging to help support student wellness. Aggregate data from students’ self-reporting is provided to the school to help develop resources for students.
Each week students receive a text containing questions about how they are doing. They are asked to respond to each question on a scale of 1 to 10. Depending on a student’s reply, the service offers appropriate resources. If a student is having issues about money, the system directs them to the financial aid office, for example. If a student is regularly entering low responses (4 and below) or responses dramatically drops off, Student Affairs is notified so someone can reach out.
Participation is not mandatory, but the service is promoted in several ways, including during orientation for first year students.
