Pepperdine Caruso Law to Provide Mediation Services to City of Los Angeles Civil Plus Human Rights and Equity Department’s Discrimination Enforcement Division
On November 14, the City of Los Angeles announced the launch of the Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department’s (LA Civil Rights) discrimination enforcement division. The division will have authority to investigate claims of discriminatory practices in the private sector.
“Fighting hate and discrimination is in our DNA at LA Civil Rights, and we are proud to take this fight to a whole new level,” said LA Civil Rights Executive Director and Pepperdine Caruso School of Law alumna Capri Maddox (JD ‘01).
The department can investigate discrimination claims against protected classes that happen in the city. Mediation services will be provided by faculty and students from the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution.
“Experiencing discrimination without investigation or enforcement undermines trust in the justice system. ” said Chalak Richards (JD ‘12), dean of students and Diversity and Belonging at Caruso Law. “We are honored to partner with LA Civil Rights to further the city’s efforts toward equity and equality.”
“The Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution is committed to providing alternative means of resolution for those involved in these very difficult situations,” said professor Stephanie Blondell. “Mediation and arbitration can support rehabilitating communities to move against hate and discrimination.”
