"When I first visited Pepperdine, I immediately felt the sense of community. Just by observation, I could see that the faculty, staff, and students were so supportive of each other,” says Brittany Takai, a graduate of UCLA. Takai fully immersed herself in the Pepperdine community by pursuing the JD/MBA joint-degree program. Her love of entrepreneurship and her desire to enhance her relationship with future clients also made the Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law an attractive opportunity for her educational career. “Lawyers are risk assessors and tend to stifle the innovative processes of business people. I want to be a risk assessor for businesses but also want the ability to understand what business owners’ goals are and why they take certain risks to achieve those goals,” explains Takai.

As a Palmer Fellow, Takai also became involved with the Palmer Center’s Micro-Enterprise Program, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps underprivileged members of the Los Angeles community seek gainful employment and launch micro-businesses. Takai has served as lead consultant within the program, managing teams and leading marketing initiatives to support the mission.

Takai reflects on her experience at Pepperdine by noting, “I have learned that something as taxing and challenging as law school can be a positive and enjoyable experience when you have supportive people around you. Pepperdine seeks to cultivate lawyers who do good in the world, and you will come out of law school more intelligent, analytical, compassionate, and ready to make a positive impact on your clients.
