Straus Institute Managing Director David Dowling Shares Mediation Expertise in Africa
The Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution expanded its global impact through its partnership with Pepperdine's Sudreau Global Justice Institute as Judge Danny Weinstein Managing Director David P. Dowling traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, to participate in the Africa Chief Justices’ Alternative Dispute Resolution Forum on June 18-19.
Dowling was invited to speak with chief justices from across the African continent on best practices for developing continent-wide mediation programs. Drawing on decades of experience in dispute resolution education and mediation program development, he shared strategies for building effective, accessible, and sustainable mediation systems that strengthen access to justice, promote collaboration, and support peaceful conflict resolution across diverse legal and cultural landscapes.
The forum brought together judicial leaders committed to advancing alternative dispute resolution within their countries, providing an opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthen regional collaboration. During the event, Pepperdine University was recognized for the impactful ADR work being carried out across Africa through the Sudreau Global Justice Institute, highlighting the University's growing international leadership in dispute resolution.
Dowling's participation reflects the collaborative efforts of the Straus Institute, Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, and the Sudreau Global Justice Institute to advance mediation and access to justice around the world. Together, these organizations continue to partner with governments, courts, universities, and justice leaders to develop innovative dispute resolution initiatives that create lasting impact across global communities.
