Professor Maureen A. Weston presented "Hosting the World: International Sporting Events as Instruments of Diplomacy and Soft Power Amid Political, Economic, and Environmental Volatility" at the Third Annual International Conference on Sports Diplomacy. Professor Maureen Weston presented on the opportunities and challenges associated with Los Angeles' hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and LA28 Olympic Games. She highlighted the growing role of international sporting events as instruments of diplomacy, soft power, and international engagement amid increasing political, economic, environmental, and social volatility.
The conference, titled "Sport as a Universal Language: Activating Sports Diplomacy as a Tool for Soft Power and Achieving Sustainable Development," took place on June 5-6 in Morocco.
