Professor Joel S. Johnson is quoted in the Law306 article, "Meet Biden's Most Recent Picks for the DC Courts." Professor Johnson comments on Vijay Shanker, the deputy chief of the appellate section of the Department of Justice's criminal division, who has been chosen by President Biden for the D.C. Court of Appeals.

Joel Johnson, a former attorney in the DOJ's criminal appellate section who worked alongside Shanker, told Law360 Pulse in an email that Shanker was an excellent choice for the bench.

"He will bring to the bench many years of rich and varied experiences as a federal prosecutor at the Justice Department and, before that, as an attorney in private practice," Johnson said. "He has briefed and argued numerous significant criminal cases in federal courts of appeals across the country. That substantial experience as an appellate advocate will be of great use to him and his colleagues on the bench."

Johnson, who currently works as an associate professor at Pepperdine University School of Law, added that not only is Shanker a well-qualified candidate, but also he is ideologically open-minded and "has a terrific disposition for an appellate judge."

"He cares deeply about arriving at the right answer and puts in the work necessary to do so," he said. "I saw those qualities firsthand while working with Vijay in the Criminal Appellate Section at the Justice Department. I'm confident they will translate well to the bench."
