Professor Jeff Baker and the Community Justice Clinic Publish "Mapping and Normative Analysis of International Guidelines for Combating Human Trafficking and Protecting Victims" with International Partners
Professor Jeffrey R. Baker and the Pepperdine Caruso Law Community Justice Clinic have published "Mapping and Normative Analysis of International Guidelines for Combating Human Trafficking and Protecting Victims" with international partners. "Mapping and Normative Analysis of International Guidelines for Combating Human Trafficking and Protecting Victims" is a multi-year, international, collaborative project to survey and compare national laws addressing human-trafficking and modern slavery throughout the Americas and other countries. Initiated in 2020 by Professor Baker through the Community Justice Clinic and Dr. Paula Danese of Sao Paulo, Brazil, the project grew to include research partners at Cátedra da OEA, Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Brazil, and the Public Actions Group at Universidad del Rosario in Colombia.
On July 1, 2024, The Justice Movement, a Brazilian human rights NGO, published the survey in Portuguese and English as an open-access resource for lawyers and lawmakers, activists and organizers, NGOs and civil society groups aiming to confront human trafficking and modern slavery, with a specific focus on gender justice.
From 2020 through 2023, students in the Community Justice Clinic, under the direction of Baker, researched these laws for nations in North, Central, and South America, the Caribbean, and some comparative jurisdictions in Africa and Asia. The following Caruso Law clinic students contributed significant research and analysis to the project: Sayyora Badalbaeva, Roxanne Baker, Shelby Bennett, Deepika Chandrashekar, Samantha Doody, Ashley Feldman, Jemuel Gascon, Sarin Goncuian, Jamie Hulsey, Wenyue (Vivien) Jin, Mackenna Johnson, Trevor Johnson, Christopher Kim, Lindsey Kirchhoff, Katlyn Koegel, Elizabeth Markus, Andrew McEwan, Cooper McHatton, and Dani Nafekh.
