Professor Emeritus Robert Cochran, Lawyers, Clients, and Moral Responsibility (Third Edition), Published by West Academic
Professor emeritus Robert Cochran's book, Lawyers, Clients, and Moral Responsibility (3rd Edition), has been published by West Academic. Previous editions were published in 1994 and 2009. Co-authored with Jerome Organ and Thomas Shaffer, the third edition is a response to the American Bar Associations's recent call for attention to professional formation. As generations of Pepperdine Caruso Law students have learned, Lawyers, Clients, and Moral Responsibility identifies four forms of professional identity.
From West Academic:
For those interested in helping law students meaningfully explore who they want to be as lawyers as they work with their clients to find solutions to clients’ problems, the third edition of Lawyers, Clients, and Moral Responsibility provides a tremendous resource. With an increased emphasis on professional identity formation in legal education, this book provides a valuable tool for law professors, lawyers, and law students.
This third edition continues to present four models of the lawyer-client relationship based on different combinations of leadership and moral engagement in the conversation.
The first two models, Autocrat and Hired Gun, both include no consideration of how the representation affects other people. The Autocrat leads the decision-making, while the Hired Gun defers to the client.
