Marking the centennial of the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial, this panel brings together leading scholars to examine the enduring significance of one of the most consequential legal and cultural battles in American history. Professor William Schultz, Professor Michael Rossi, and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Edward J. Larson will offer interdisciplinary perspectives on what happened at the trial and how it has impacted American jurisprudence, public education, and the evolving relationship between science and religion. The discussion will be moderated by Chicago Forum Faculty Advisor Professor Peggy Mason and will reflect on the trial’s legacy in light of contemporary debates over state authority, free inquiry, and democracy.
