Professor David Dowling Brings Conflict Resolution Experience to Brazil
Professor David Dowling, managing director of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, recently visited Brazil to present a series of academic, professional, and competition-related engagements in Curitiba and São Paulo.
On March 2, Professor Dowling presented to the Brazilian Bar Association in Curitiba. He discussed the need to develop mediation in the Brazilian legal system and the importance of dispute resolution.
Professor Dowling then traveled from Curitiba to São Paulo and participated in the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR) Brazil Advisory Board Meeting held on March 3. The meeting brought together representatives from approximately 20 of the largest Brazilian and international law firms. During the session, Professor Dowling delivered a presentation titled “The Power of the Peacemaker” and had the opportunity to introduce the Straus Institute Online LLM in International Commercial Arbitration to leading practitioners. Scholarships were also awarded to selected partners.
On March 4, Professor Dowling participated as a speaker and moderator at the Third Annual CPR–University of São Paulo Collaborative Conference, hosted by the University of São Paulo Law School, the country’s oldest and most prestigious law school.
From March 5–7, he took part in the CPR International Mediation Competition, which included the opening ceremony, keynote events, judges’ workshops, and networking programs with practitioners and competition judges. He also served as a final round judge and delivered closing remarks at the award ceremony, where he presented Pepperdine Straus Institute certificates to the winning students.
Throughout the visit, Professor Dowling engaged with leading law firms, academics, and students, strengthening institutional relationships and promoting the Straus Institute’s online LLM programs and international collaboration opportunities.
