Pepperdine To Become Smoke-Free Fall 2018

Over the last several years, the University community has been in active conversation about smoking on Pepperdine campuses. After taking the time to review the impact of this policy, as well as gather additional feedback from campus community members, all Pepperdine campuses will become 100 percent smoke-free effective August 1, 2018.

As a university that values the health and safety of its campus community, Pepperdine now joins nearly 1,800 other campuses in the United States that are 100 percent smoke free. A smoke-free campus will reduce health risks among members of our community, encourage healthy living, and reduce cigarette litter on campus and the resultant risk of wildfire. In addition, we hope this change will broadly discourage the use of tobacco, which continues to be the leading cause of premature and preventable deaths in the United States.

Pepperdine acknowledges that certain individuals may experience extreme difficulty with smoking cessation, and we are committed to treating those who smoke with respect, dignity, and care. For community members who wish to stop smoking, the University encourages participation in one of our subsidized cessation programs, which are available to all faculty, staff, and students. For more information, students should call the Student Health Center.

All members of the University community share in the responsibility of adhering to and enforcing this policy whose success depends upon the thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation of those who smoke and those who do not.

Thank you for your support as we work to promote a healthier community and campus environment.
