Pepperdine Caruso Law Hosts 2026 Otto Cipolla Closing Argument Competition
The Otto Cipolla Closing Argument Competition returned this spring as one of Pepperdine Caruso Law’s most competitive events, drawing nearly 100 competitors. After multiple elimination rounds, seven finalists advanced to the final round on April 10, where they presented closing arguments in front of an audience of more than 200 students, faculty, and visiting families. Omatsone Emiko earned first place, followed by Ishika Patel in second place, and Jacob Guastella in third place.
Hosted by the Pepperdine Caruso Law Trial Team and organized by Caden Cutter and Justin Choi, the competition simulates real courtroom advocacy by requiring students to deliver persuasive closing arguments under strict time constraints. Finalists were evaluated by a panel of experienced attorneys, faculty, and trial team members.
In addition to the top three finishers, finalists included Charlotte Hill, Carter Fortman, Anthony Sarafian, and Jonah Farahmand. Beyond final placements, the competition serves as a tryout for the Trial Team, one of the university’s most selective student organizations. With cash prizes and Trial Team consideration at stake, the narrowing of more than 100 competitors to seven finalists underscores both the level of competition and the event’s role in identifying the next generation of student advocates.
