Parris Institute for Professional Excellence Celebrates 10th Presentation of the Evan T. Carthen Inspirational Leadership Award

The Parris Institute for Professional Excellence marked a meaningful milestone this year as it celebrated the 10th presentation of the Evan T. Carthen Inspirational Leadership Award at its Annual Awards Ceremony. Established in 2017 in memory of 1L Evan Carthen, the award honors students who embody his legacy of integrity, service, optimism, and the ability to inspire others to be their best.

Since its founding, the award has been presented annually to one student from each 1L section, recognizing those who stand out not only for their achievements but for their character and positive impact on the community. This year’s recipients—Maddie Goodpaster (Section A), Alan Beard (Section B), and Brandon Colechio (Section C)—reflect the very qualities Evan was known for, carrying forward his spirit through their leadership and encouragement of others.

The ceremony was especially meaningful with the presence of Twillea, Evan’s mother, who has attended each year since her son’s passing. Reflecting on the award and Evan’s legacy, she shared, “This annual award embodies how Evan truly lived through his quote, ‘Live and be a blessing unto someone else.’ We are grateful for this award because it continues to remind students that the greatest impact we can make is in how we encourage, empower, and stand beside one another. The best leaders are developed through service, and we are excited to see how future generations will continue making a positive impact on society.”

Dean Paul Caron said “I have had the honor of participating in all ten Evan T. Carthen Inspirational Leadership Award celebrations. Evan’s legacy lives on at Pepperdine Caruso Law through the students who receive this honor and the community that celebrate his enduring influence.”
