Master of Legal Studies Student Teresa Guevara Advocates for Celiac Safety Act

Straus Institute Graduate Law Program online Master of Legal Studies student Teresa Guevara is working to pass the Celiac Safety Act of 2026. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that is managed by following a strict gluten-free diet. The Celiac Safety Act of 2026 (H.R. 9048), introduced in the United States House of Representatives by Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri and Betty McCollum of Minnesota, would expand the list of major food allergens to cover all gluten-containing grains and require clear labeling on all food products.

Guevara has contacted United States representative for California's 33rd congressional district Pete Aguilar to advocate for Americans with Disabilities Act-related changes involving celiac disease and promote better education and training for medical providers, restaurants, and other public establishments about how the disease affects overall health. She will discuss with Aguilar ways to raise local awareness of the disease, with the long-term goal of advocating for celiac disease awareness in Congress.
