In Recognition of Judge Richard Posner
September 8, 2017 | By Kylie Larkin -- Judge Richard A. Posner, one of the nation's leading federal appellate judges,
announced this week that he is retiring from the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
in Chicago. Judge Posner has been an influential legal voice, writing more than 3,300
opinions during his time on the bench. Judge Posner's opinions cited works by Straus
Institute Associate Dean, Thomas J. Stipanowich, including seven citations to Professor Stipanowich's co-authored Federal Arbitration
Treatise, and one citation to Professor Stipanowich's 1987 article, "Arbitration and
the Multiparty Dispute: The Search for Workable Solutions." In addition, Dean Emeritus
Deanell Reece Tacha participated last year in a University of Chicago Law Symposium
on Judge Posner's most recent book, "Divergent Paths: The Academy and the Judiciary"
(Harvard University Press, 2016). Judge Posner will continue to teach at the University
of Chicago Law School.

Posner said in a statement he is "proud to have promoted a pragmatic approach to judging... and to apply my view that judicial opinions should be easy to understand and that judges should focus on the right and wrong in every case."
The 7th Circuit's Chief Judge, Dianne Wood, calls Posner "one of the most distinguished people to ever sit on the federal bench," adding "His opinions have had an impact around the world."
