The Straus Institute to Host Launch of Beyond the Dialogue Initiative

On November 18, The Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine Caruso Law will host the launch of Beyond the Dialogue, an initiative that advances the role of mediation in bridging divides in today's environment of conflict. Through partnerships with local communities, thought leadership across the country and around the world, and groundbreaking scholarship, The Straus Institute's faculty, staff, and students are working to help people and institutions use alternative dispute resolution (ADR) to manage complex issues. Professor Sukhsimranjit Singh, Judge Danny Weinstein Managing Director, will honor Judge Danny Weinstein himself in recognition of the $1 million gift to the institute to help increase access to the unmatched ADR scholarship and training provided at Straus. The event will also feature a panel discussion among Singh, Judge Tiffany M. Williams (ret.), and additional speakers, in discussing the current climate of dispute resolution.

The Beyond the Dialogue initiative has already given rise to powerful community collaborations. The Straus Institute recently partnered with the City of Santa Monica to offer pro bono mediation services to local landlords and tenants. Students and faculty will aid these clients in navigating the end of eviction moratoriums put in place in response to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In August, Professor Singh conducted training sessions for local law enforcement professionals, facilitating dialogue about internal race relations and community response. These trainings continue the Straus Institute's work with law enforcement officers and civilian staff, several of whom have obtained Master of Dispute Resolution degrees at Straus.

Straus leaders continue to hold webinars, speak at events, and invite experts to share their knowledge with the Pepperdine community. All are welcome to join the November 18 launch event via Zoom at 12:30 PM Pacific Time. Advance registration is required to receive the Zoom link.
