This program is developed by the Federal Judicial Center and the Wm. Matthew Byrne,
Jr., Judicial Clerkship Institute at Pepperdine Caruso School of Law. In consultation
with judges, law professors and subject matter experts, subjects have been identified
that law clerks most need to know. Program topics include managing high profile cases,
supporting the efficiency and effectiveness of chambers, serving self-represented
parties, and an update on pending U.S. Supreme Court cases.
March 14: Managing High Profile Cases
Honorable James Shadid, U.S. District Court of the Central District of Illinois will share his experience working with his law clerks to manage a high-profile case. Judge Shadid will provide tips to help law clerks prepare in the event such a case lands on their judge’s docket.

March 28: Serving Self Represented Parties
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss strategies for serving self-represented parties with one another and learn more about the role of Pro Se Staff Attorneys in their courts.
In this Court Web episode host, Brenda Baldwin-White, Senior Judicial Education Attorney, talks with Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley of the Northern District of California, and Judge Willie Epps of the Western District of Missouri about tips for efficiently and fairly adjudicating civil cases brought or defended by parties without the benefit of counsel. They also cover suggestions for obtaining pro bono representation.
