2012
In October, Ambassador Kmiec delivered an invited lecture on religious liberty as part of a series in honor of St. Mary's College's sesquicentennial. He also discussed his new book, America Undecided: Catholic, Independent, and Social Justice Perspectives on Election 2012. Joining the ambassador on the book are co-authors Edward McGlynn Gaffney Jr., a respected lawyer and theologian; and J. Patrick Whelan, a member of the faculties at Harvard Medical School and USC's Keck School of Medicine.
Ambassador Kmiec's book launch was held in the resplendent 16th century aula magna of the University of Malta in Valletta. The event was hosted by rector Camilleri and keynoted by His Grace Archbishop Paul Cremona and His Excellency George A Abela, the President of the Republic. Dr. Omar Grech of the Mediterranean Diplomatic School; Dr. Father Michael Aguis of the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy, Dr., Father Joseph Borg of Theology and Dr. Clare Vassallo all presented papers on the Theology of Kindness; whether diplomatic work is open to those with advanced academic training; religion and politics; and whether modern civil discourse can in fact ever be. .... Civil?

Two days after his speech, President Abela sent the following e-mail to Ambassador Kmiec:

Ambassador Kmiec highlights the self-evident truth that stands behind the American constitution at the 4th of July Celebration in the Barrakka Gardens in Malta. In addition, the Ambassador extended the personal greetings of President Obama to President Abela and Prime Minister Gonzi, reflecting on how US Embassy in Malta was following the Presidential instruction to celebrate the 4th as a shared recognition of "our common unanimity." Ambassador Kmiec delivered the toast in English and Maltese.
