Julia MacDonald (JD '13) and Innocence Project earn freedom for Keith Harward, imprisoned for 33 years

April 10, 2016 -- For the last two years, a team from the Innocence Project including Pepperdine Law alumna Julia MacDonald (JD '13) of Skadden Arps (on secondment) (back left in photo below) has been representing Keith Harward, imprisoned the last 33 years for rape and murder. DNA evidence has exonerated Harward, and he was released from prison last Friday.

"These are my heroes," Keith Harward said of his attorneys, upon walking out of prison a free man.

NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY/AP) – A former sailor convicted of rape and murder in Newport News 33 years ago for a crime he didn't commit is now a free man.

Keith Harward, now 60 years old, emerged from the Nottoway Correctional Center Friday afternoon. He'd been in the prison since 2014 and had served time in four other facilities during his decades-long incarceration.
