Ed Larson delivers lecture on "A Magnificent Catastrophe" -- John Marshall House

Larson delivered a lecture on his book, "A Magnificent Catastrophe: The Tumultuous Election of 1800, America's First Presidential Campaign," at the John Marshall House in Virginia.  The lecture, held on April 5, was part of the John Marshall House Salon Series, sponsored by Preservation Virginia.

"They could write like angels and scheme like demons," says Edward Larson's masterful account of the wild ride that was the 1800 presidential election—an election so turbulent and so momentous to the future of American democracy that Thomas Jefferson would later dub it "America's second revolution."

In the spirit of the intimate salon gatherings of the Enlightenment, guests will have the opportunity to discuss and engage in conversation on the finer points of American democracy with the author, historians and interpreters in the home of Chief Justice Marshall.
