Success for the Community Justice Clinic

Throughout the fall of 2017, the Community Justice Clinic continued to expand the depth and scope of its work for nonprofits and community organizations seeking justice in the world. This semester, seven students worked for seventeen clients on thirty-one matters. This pro bono legal work included compliance and governance work for nonprofits in California, DC, and Washington, policy research on land rights in India, research on employment law in northern Uganda, contracts for the construction of a hospital ward in southern Uganda, documents for an agriculture education project in Ventura County, consignment and sales contracts for art and music for a new social enterprise in Atlanta, counsel for neighborhood councils in Los Angeles, advice to empower new initiatives for improved children's health in Los Angeles County, advice and filings for a new human rights organization in the US, guidance for labor advocates in Malibu, advocacy for systems change for foster children in California courts, transactions to reorganize a multinational NGO, leases for farm-land and markets, and several other critical projects.   

Professor Jeff Baker directs the Community Justice Clinic, and he estimates that the students provided over $220,000 in pro bono legal services for its clients. The Pepperdine Legal Clinics together provided nearly $1.9 million in pro bono legal services across nine clinics throughout the fall semester.
