Jeff Carpenter (JD '92) was elected District Attorney for Herkimer County, NY, on Nov. 6. His four-year term will begin on January 1st.
Carpenter's most recent role has been as acting district attorney, a position he began in January 2012 after having served as assistant district attorney for nearly a decade. His work has focused on cases involving everything from minor traffic offenses to major crimes such as homicide and a variety of felony offenses.
A native of Herkimer County, Carpenter returned to his home state after graduating from Pepperdine Law and passing the New York State Bar. He began his own law practice and a 20-year career teaching criminal law, criminal procedure, and constitutional law at Herkimer County Community College.
In 1999, Jeff was appointed the Village Attorney for the Village of Mohawk and, in 2000, he was appointed and then elected to the position of Herkimer Town Justice before taking on the role of assistant district attorney.
In addition to being a respected trial attorney, Carpenter recently argued for the third time before New York's highest court, the New York State Court of Appeals. His appellate cases have established legal precedent in New York and, in a case he is particularly proud of, helped make the lives of volunteer firemen safer at scenes of motor vehicle accidents.
