Alana Knaster is the Deputy Director of the Monterey County Resource Management Agency which coordinates the programs and regulatory functions of the planning, building, public works, and redevelopment agencies of the county. From 1980-2008, Ms. Knaster was the president of the Mediation Institute, a national nonprofit mediation firm specializing in the resolution of complex land use planning and environmental disputes. Many of the disputes that she successfully mediated involved dozens of stakeholder groups including government agencies, major corporations, and public interest groups. Her cases included forest sustainability, multi-state resource protection plans, growth management and settlement of CEQA litigation. One of her specialties involves use of a consensus approach to scientific negotiations for addressing technical issues in disputes. Knaster has been an adjunct faculty member at Pepperdine Law School, teaching courses in environmental and public policy mediation, from 1989 to the present.
