Pepperdine University School of Law

Herbert & Elinor Nootbaar Institute on Law, Religion & Ethics

Human Rights Program

General Information

With a focus on faith-based initiatives, Pepperdine's international human rights program is unique. Supervised by Associate Director of the Nootbaar Institute Melanie Howard, the program is growing quickly in response to increased student interest in this area.

In the classroom, students learn international law and human rights law from distinguished the Nootbaar Institute faculty such as Professors Roger Alford and Lee Boyd. Outside the classroom, students gain practical experience and make valuable contributions through international externship placements with human rights organizations around the world as well as through on-campus internships. Recently, students were provided the opportunity to assist in researching and drafting an opposition to a petition for certiorari to the United States Supreme Court in a case involving international human rights. The Institute also sponsors speakers, panel discussions and conferences on various human rights issues. Finally, graduating students desiring to pursue careers in the human rights field receive career counseling and mentorship from the Nootbaar Institute faculty and staff.
