Prior to joining the faculty at Pepperdine's School of Law, Harry Caldwell served as a trial deputy with the Riverside District Attorney's office and later served in a similar position with the Santa Barbara District Attorney. In 1980, he joined the law faculty at Pepperdine where he focuses on trial advocacy, criminal procedure and criminal law. Caldwell was honored as a Luckman Distinguished Teaching Fellow in 1991 and again in 2000. Also in 2000, the Roscoe Pound Institute selected him as the nation's premier trial practice teacher.
Caldwell has written extensively in the areas of criminal procedure and trial advocacy. In 1998, he co-wroteLadies and Gentlemen of the Jury: The Ten Greatest Closing Arguments. the Los Angeles Times selected the book for its Best Nonfiction of 1998 Award. In 1990, he wrote The California Criminal Trialbook. He also co-authored The Art and Science of Trial Advocacy with Pepperdine professors Tim Perrin and Carol Chase.
Caldwell also represents inmates on California's death row in their appeals to the California Supreme Court. Caldwell has been featured as an expert in several publications including the Ventura County Star.
