The United States Senate confirmed Jennifer Dorsey (JD '97) to the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada on July 9. Since graduating from the School of Law, she has served as an attorney at the Nevada law firm of Kemp, Jones & Coulthard LLP, where she has been a partner since 2004.
"The Pepperdine School of Law is honored to congratulate the Honorable Jennie Dorsey on her appointment to the United States District Court for the District of Nevada," says Dean Deanell Reece Tacha. "Judge Dorsey is a distinguished graduate of this law school whose professional career had modeled the highest ideals of a Pepperdine lawyer. She will be an outstanding jurist who will bring to the bench a fine intellect, outstanding experience, a humane appreciation of the importance of the rule of law to ordered liberty, and even-handed fairness for all who appear in her court. Her appointment is a credit to the nation and its judiciary. We are so proud of her achievements and service."
On September 19, 2012, President Barack Obama nominated Dorsey to serve as a United States District Judge, to the seat vacated by Judge Larry R. Hicks.
Prior to her nomination, she practiced before both state and federal courts and handled a wide variety of matters, including appeals, class actions and complex commercial litigation at Kemp, Jones & Coulthard LLP. She has handled and argued a wide range of cases in the Nevada Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and was part of the firm's appellate team that obtained a unanimous decision from the United States Supreme Court in the healthcare fraud class action, Forsyth v. Humana.
Named as a Super Lawyers Mountain States Rising Star and recognized as one of Nevada Business Magazine's Legal Elite, Dorsey was also selected to serve on the Nevada Supreme Court's Committee on Professionalism. She is a sustaining member of the American Society of Legal Writers ("Scribes") and the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association, and she holds Martindale-Hubbell's highest AV rating for competency and ethics.
A native Las Vegan, Dorsey received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She served as a Congressional Intern for Senator Richard Bryan (D-Nev.) and a Judicial Extern for the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
At Pepperdine, Dorsey was a published member of the Pepperdine Law Review and has been the coauthor of the Nevada section of the treatise Survey of State Class Action Law since 1999. She currently sits on the Pepperdine School of Law's Board of Visitors, is a member of the UNLV Foundation's Advisory Board, and has been recognized for her pro bono class action work with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada.
