Professor Larson Speaks on Why Darwin Still Matters
Pepperdine's Ed Larson, University Professor and the Hugh & Hazel Darling Chair in Law recently spoke at the conference "Why Darwin Still Matters," at Pepperdine University on Nov. 20 and 21. A renowned Darwin scholar, Larson received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize in History for his book Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion (1997).
Professor Janet Kerr's Article Earns Acclaim
Janet E. Kerr, professor of law and executive director of the Geoffrey H. Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law, has published "The Integrative Market Hypothesis for Stock Market Fluctuations," in the Business, Entrepreneurship, and the Law. The article, which Kerr co-wrote with alumnus Alessandro Casati (JD '04), recently became the third most downloaded article in the physics and economics category on the Social Science Research Network (SSRN).

Professor Miller Selected for 2009 Howard A. White Award for Teaching Excellence
Anthony Miller, professor of law, was announced as one of the 2009 recipients of the Howard A. White Award for Teaching Excellence on Oct. 2 during the University Faculty Conference. President Andrew K. Benton and Provost Darryl Tippens presented the awards with Jay Brewster, chair of the Howard A. White committee, during the conference luncheon.
Professor Cupp Presented with AALA Scholarship Award
Richard L. Cupp, Jr., John W. Wade Professor of Law, was named the 2009 winner of the Professional Scholarship Award by the American Agricultural Law Association (AALA) for his article Moving Beyond Animal Rights: A Legal/Contractualist Critique published in the San Diego Law Review. The award was presented at AALA's annual conference in Williamsburg, Virginia, on Sept. 25
Judge Einhorn Authors Chapter in Refugee Roulette Book
Judge Bruce Einhorn, director of Pepperdine's Asylum Clinic, recently authored a chapter in the book Refugee Roulette, edited by Paul Schrag of Georgetown Law Center and published by NYU Press. The book analyzes the challenge of dramatically disparate asylum grant rates among federal immigration judges across the United States.
Dean Starr Named in the Top 100 Lawyers in California
Ken Starr, Duane and Kelly Roberts Dean of the School of Law, has been named in the Top 100 Lawyers in California by 'The Daily Journal'. Lawyers are nominated by their peers for the annual list. The Top 100 will be honored in a ceremony on Sept. 22.
Maureen Arellano Weston Named New Associate Dean for Research
Maureen Arellano Weston, professor of law, has been named the new associate dean for research at Pepperdine University School of Law, effective September 1, 2009. Weston earned her JD from the University of Colorado and her BA from the University of Denver, magna cum laude.
Kmiec Confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Malta
Douglas W. Kmiec, Pepperdine's Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was confirmed by the Senate as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Malta on Friday, August 7. The vote was unanimous.

Cupp Publishes Moving Beyond Animal Rights in San Diego Law Review
Richard L. Cupp, John W. Wade Professor of Law, recently published the article Moving Beyond Animal Rights: A Legal/Contractualist Critique in the San Diego Law Review. Cupp, who is a longtime Animal Law scholar, frequently writes and lectures on the rising significance of Animal Law. His article documents that rise and provides the view that expanding rights is not the answer to our appropriately increasing sensitivity regarding animals' welfare.
Kmiec Appointed Ambassador to Malta by President Obama
Douglas W. Kmiec, Pepperdine's Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was appointed to be ambassador to the Republic of Malta by President Barack Obama on July 2. The nomination must first be confirmed by the Senate in September.

Stipanowich Awarded William H. Webster Chair in Dispute Resolution
Thomas J. Stipanowich was recently named the William H. Webster Chair in Dispute Resolution, a new endowed chair at Pepperdine University School of Law. Stipanowich is the academic director of Pepperdine's Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, which has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the number one dispute resolution program in the nation for the last five years.
