David J. Barrett

David J. Barrett is the Assistant General Counsel (Environmental) at Sempra Energy, based in San Diego, CA.

As Assistant General Counsel (Environmental), David Barrett is responsible for advising senior management and managing all environmental, land use, and natural resource legal matters for all Sempra Energy businesses.

After graduating from Pepperdine University School of Law, David joined Latham & Watkins in San Diego where his practice included complex environmental litigation, transactions and compliance counseling. In 1999, he moved to the firm's New York office. As New York Environmental Department Chair, he handled a wide variety of environmental and energy matters (including the development and financing of major independent power projects and electric industry restructuring), and represented issuers, borrowers, underwriters and lending institutions on environmental and energy issues in acquisitions, equity and debt offerings, project financings and other secured finance transactions. He joined Sempra Energy in 2002 to lead the environmental law group for this Fortune 250 energy company.

He currently lives in Coronado with his wife Kathy and two children, Grace and David, Jr.
