General Program Policies

London Program

Except for the information already given, all University Finance Office policies are the same for the London program as for the Malibu program, including the payment schedules for tuition bills. All Pepperdine students admitted to the London program are eligible for normal financial assistance programs. Visiting students from other schools are not eligible for financial assistance from Pepperdine. Visiting students processing financial aid applications through their own schools under the Financial Aid Consortium will be provided with appropriate information to permit their application to be completed. Because the cost of the London program is greater than the normal student budget, the London financial aid budget is increased to reflect the increased cost.

Academic Policy

The academic policy in London is the same as the academic policy on the Malibu campus which can be found here. Only Pepperdine students in good academic standing with clear disciplinary records are eligible to participate in the London program. Visiting students must have permission from the academic dean or associate dean of their school attesting to their being in good standing and agreeing to accept the units earned in transfer.

Academic and attendance policies are enforced in London.  Regular attendance is required in all courses. Students will be dismissed from courses for excessive absences. A student dropped from more than one course in the same semester for non-attendance will be dismissed from the School of Law.

Add/Drop and Withdrawal

Students may add or drop a course up to the end of the second week of classes without approval. Changes after that time may result in a notation of “W” on the student’s transcript and require the approval of Professor Colleen Graffy. Students who withdraw from a class without notifying the records office and without completing the required documents may receive the grade of “fail” for the course.


As is customary in law schools, grading is based largely on the final examination in each course, except for skills training courses and courses which require substantial research and writing. Final examinations are graded anonymously, with students using examination numbers instead of names on their examinations. Midterm examinations may be given in any course. Professors have discretion to make a small adjustment to the final grade based on factors which include, but are not limited to, quality of preparation and recitation, attendance, and willingness to participate in discussion. The law school permits students to take the essay portions of final examinations on student laptop computers. The software program for the taking of such examinations is provided by the school. With the exception of take-home examinations, students may not take examinations on laptop computers using any program other than the proprietary program approved by the school.


Beginning with the Class of 2010, letter grades will be awarded instead of numerical grades. The following numerical weights are assigned to letter grades:

Students with Disabilities

Pepperdine University welcomes students with disabilities who are otherwise qualified for the London program. In compliance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, the University does not discriminate on the basis of disability. Students should recognize that those laws do not apply to public buildings and other facilities in England and the rest of Europe and many are not configured to accommodate disabilities. The Pepperdine London Center is accessible to disabled students even though access may be somewhat difficult. A portable ramp for wheelchair access can be arranged. There is a small elevator giving access to the upper floors of the building although it will not accommodate a wheelchair. Wherever possible, it is the policy of the university to reasonably accommodate the needs of those persons having disabilities. Such disabilities should be made known to the Malibu Director of International Programs in advance so that appropriate arrangements, where possible, can be made.

Cancellation Policy and Travel Warnings

The London program is subject to cancellation, without prior notice, if fewer than ten students have enrolled in the program fourteen (14) days prior to the commencement of the term. In that event, students will be contacted by email and the deposits and application fees paid by students will be fully refunded. Our first London Program was in 1981; to date, we have never canceled a summer or fall London Program. Refund Policy for Withdrawal After Commencement of the Program

University operating expenses and student charges are planned on an annual basis. The refund policies have been established in recognition of both the University’s advance commitment to operating expenses and a spirit of fairness for students who find it necessary to discontinue the use of University services. The policies for dismissal and suspension are the same as for voluntary withdrawal.


Consideration for refund of tuition requires written notice from the student to the Records Office of the student’s intention to drop a course or withdraw from the University. The date this notice is received by the Records Office is the effective date for determining the refund amount according to the schedule below. Students may drop classes without tuition penalty during the add/drop period only. Students withdrawing from courses after the add/drop period are subject to the partial refund policies listed below for the fall and spring semesters.

This refund schedule will be applied to the maximum number of units in which a student was enrolled if the student withdraws or is dismissed any time after the add/drop period.
